(재)태호문화재단은 한국 단색화의 대표 작가 김태호 화백(1948–2022)의 예술적 업적을 보존·연구·계승하기 위해 설립된 비영리 기관으로, 경기도 파주에 위치하고 있습니다.

김태호 화백은 부산 출생으로 홍익대학교에서 서양화를 전공하고 동 대학 교수로 재직하며 후학을 양성한, 한국 현대미술의 흐름을 이끈 작가입니다. 1970–80년대 '형상(Form)' 연작을 통해 시대의 억압적 분위기를 절제된 조형 언어로 담아내며 주목받았고, 이후 평생의 화업이 된 '내재율(Internal Rhythm)' 연작으로 독자적인 예술 세계를 구축했습니다. '내재율'은 캔버스 위에 격자 구조를 따라 수십 겹의 물감을 쌓아 올린 뒤 표면을 깎아내어, 그 안에 축적된 색의 층위를 드러내는 작업입니다. 쌓기와 덜어내기를 반복하는 이 수행적 과정은 노동과 시간, 물성에 대한 깊은 사유를 담고 있으며, 무수한 색점이 벌집처럼 살아 숨 쉬는 화면은 이름 그대로 내면의 리듬을 시각화합니다. 이러한 작업 세계는 한국 단색화의 정신성을 계승하면서도 그 지평을 확장한 성취로 평가받고 있습니다.

재단은 화백의 유작 및 관련 자료를 체계적으로 보존·관리하는 동시에, 전시·교육·학술 연구·디지털 아카이빙 사업을 통해 그의 예술 세계를 국내외 일반 대중과 폭넓게 공유하고자 합니다. 본 재단은 공익을 목적으로 운영되는 비영리 기관으로서, 발생하는 모든 수익은 사회와 문화 발전을 위한 공공의 이익에 환원됩니다. 또한 김태호 화백의 예술을 국제적으로 확산시켜 한국 현대미술의 가치를 세계에 알리는 데 기여하고자 합니다.

Tae-Ho Cultural Foundation was established to preserve, research, and carry forward the artistic legacy of the late Kim Tae-Ho (1948–2022), one of the leading figures of Korean Dansaekhwa (monochrome painting). The Foundation is located in Paju, Gyeonggi-do.

Born in Busan, Kim Tae-Ho studied painting at Hongik University, where he later served as a professor and mentored generations of artists. He first gained recognition in the 1970s and 80s with his "Form" series, which translated the tensions of the era into a restrained visual language. He then devoted the rest of his life to the "Internal Rhythm" series, the body of work that defined his singular artistic vision. In these works, he built up dozens of layers of paint along a grid structure, then carved into the surface to reveal the strata of color accumulated beneath. This meditative cycle of layering and excavation embodies a profound reflection on labor, time, and materiality, while the resulting honeycomb-like fields of countless color cells seem to breathe with an inner pulse — a true visualization of internal rhythm. His practice is widely regarded as both an inheritance and an expansion of the spiritual depth of Korean Dansaekhwa.

The Foundation systematically conserves his artworks and archival materials while actively promoting exhibitions, educational programs, scholarly research, and digital archiving initiatives. As a nonprofit organization dedicated to the public good, all income generated by the Foundation is reinvested into cultural development and public benefit. The Foundation is also committed to expanding the international presence of Kim Tae-Ho's work, fostering greater global recognition of his artistic contributions and advancing the visibility of contemporary Korean art worldwide.

'내재율'은 김태호 화백이 평생을 바쳐 탐구한 대표 연작으로, 한국 단색화의 지평을 확장한 성취로 평가받습니다.

작가는 캔버스 위에 연필로 격자를 긋고, 그 구조를 따라 물감을 스무 겹 이상 쌓아 올립니다. 서로 다른 색의 층이 두텁게 축적되면, 이번에는 칼로 표면을 깎아냅니다. 그러자 깎인 자리마다 벌집 같은 무수한 작은 방(房)이 드러나고, 그 안에는 겹겹이 쌓였던 색의 지층이 숨 쉬듯 모습을 드러냅니다. 하나의 화면에 수만 개에 이르는 색의 세포가 태어나는 것입니다.

쌓아 올리는 행위와 덜어내는 행위, 채움과 비움을 무한히 반복하는 이 과정은 그 자체로 수행에 가깝습니다. 완성된 화면은 멀리서 보면 고요한 단색의 평면이지만, 가까이 다가설수록 색과 색이 부딪히고 스며드는 미세한 울림으로 가득합니다. '내재율'이라는 제목 그대로, 겉으로 드러나지 않는 내면의 리듬 — 노동의 시간, 호흡의 반복, 물성의 생명력 — 이 화면 깊은 곳에서 진동합니다.

Internal Rhythm is the signature series to which Kim Tae-Ho devoted his life, widely regarded as a body of work that expanded the horizons of Korean Dansaekhwa.

The artist began by drawing a pencil grid across the canvas, then layering paint along its structure — more than twenty coats of differing colors, accumulated into a dense mass. He then took a blade to the surface, carving it away. Where the knife passed, countless small cells emerged like a honeycomb, each one revealing the strata of color buried within. In a single canvas, tens of thousands of chromatic cells are brought to life.

This endless cycle of building up and carving away — of filling and emptying — approaches a form of meditative discipline. Seen from a distance, the finished surface appears as a serene monochrome plane; up close, it teems with subtle resonances where colors collide and seep into one another. True to its title, an unseen inner rhythm — the time of labor, the repetition of breath, the vitality of material itself — pulses deep within the painting.
